3 weird stadiums in the world

Braga - Municipal de BragaBraga - Municipal de Braga 13.11.2018: You might have heard about Wembley Stadium which is currently the temporary home of Tottenham Hotspur. You probably would be familiar with Camp Nou which can accommodate a staggering 90, 354 spectators. And you may know about Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium.rnHowever, you probably would not have heard about the stadiums that we are going to talk about here. The following stadiums are some of the strangest stadiums in the world.

1- Estadio Hernando Siles

Estadio Hernando Siles is one of the highest stadiums in the world. It is situated at an incredible 3,637 meters altitude. This stadium was named after Hernando Siles Reyes who was the 31st President of Bolivia. It can accommodate 41,143 football spectators.
While local teams may be used to the atmosphere, the foreign players can really suffer from the thin air of the stadium. In fact, Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria were visibly sick during a match played between Bolivia and Argentina in 2013. Both players were seen with oxygen masks at half-time.

In order to make sure that Bolivian teams could not have an unfair advantage due to their stadiums, FIFA made a ruling in 2007 that football stadiums above 2500 m could not be used for the World Cup qualifying matches. However, FIFA later increased the altitude limit to 3000 m and also made an exemption for the Estadio Hernando Siles after many countries protested against the ruling.

The stadium has been used for many historic matches too. A notable match took place in 2009 when Argentina lost 6-1 to suffer their worst defeat against Bolivia in 60 years.

It has two enormous stands which are constructed on either side of the pitch and both the stands are connected with each other by dozens of steel strings. This architectural marvel was designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura.

Estadio Municipal de Braga has the capacity to accommodate 30,286 spectators. It is currently the home ground of Sporting Clube de Braga. It was built as a venue for the Euro 2004 Championships and was later used for two group matches of the competition.
