Modernization of the Sevilla FC stadium done in three stages

Sevilla - Estadio R. S. PizjuánSevilla - Estadio R. S. Pizjuán 02.11.2016: In 2015 the Sevilla FC stadium - Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán - underwent major modernization. Even though the stadium does not resemble modern arenas, which are being built nowadays, the renovation did improve the stadium facilities. Architects of new arenas typically deal with retractable roofs or moveable pitches, whereas the owners of the Andalusian club had different plans, given their financial possibilities. It was only the main stand that was covered by roof prior the modernization and this has not changed after it.

Modernization: In the first stage new seats in the club colours were installed at the stadium and in the second stage the exterior was renovated, which made the stadium, built in 1958, look younger. The Valencia stadium - Mestalla - underwent a similar renovation in 2014. Sevilla FC also plan to make over the stadium façade in the third stage of the modernization. The reinforced concrete structure will be covered with mesh façade, which will be lit at night.

Capacity: In 1974 the stadium could hold 77,000 spectators. Prior the 1982 Spain World Cup the capacity was reduced to 70,000. It was further decreased in 1997, when the stadium was turned into an all-seater and could hold 45,000 spectators. In 2015, after the most extensive renovation so far, new seats were installed at the stadium and the capacity dropped to 42,500.

The name of the stadium: Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán is named after the long-serving President of the club who was instrumental in finding a plot of land and encouraging investments into the construction. However, he did not live to see the stadium built; he died two months before the construction began.

Sevilla FC achievements: the most impressive achievement is undoubtedly the record number of Europa League wins. Sevilla FC played the Europa League final three times consecutively and got the golden hat-trick (in 2014, 2015, 2016). They also won the Europa League in 2006 and 2007, which means that they have won the second most prestigious football competition in Europe five times so far.
