The renovated Stade Vélodrome opened

Marsille - Stade VélodromeMarsille - Stade Vélodrome 07.01.2015: After the renovation works, which went on for three years, were completed earlier this year, Stade Vélodrome was officially opened by a French league match between Olympique Marseille and Toulouse, which the home team won 2:0. The match was seen by 61,846 spectators, which is a record number, beating the previous record by several thousands. Apart from Ligue 1 matches the stadium will host many other events: international matches, rugby matches, concerts, Euro 2016 matches and possibly also a Champions League final.

Although Stade Vélodrome remains the property of the city of Marseille, it will be run by Arema, a subsidiary of Bouygues. The building contractor undertook to cover the build costs, which went up to 268 million EUR. In return, they will receive a considerable part of the income and 12 million EUR a year to be paid to them yearly by the city of Marseille for the next 30 years. To lighten the financial burden on the city, Olympique Marseille will pay most of the yearly instalments in the way of rent fees.

Even though Stade Vélodrome is one of the most expensive stadiums in Europe, it will offer a wide range of services, well worth the renovation costs. About 6,000 commercial spots, 80 sky boxes and a total capacity of 67,394 seats should be enough to meet the expectations of all partners. Especially since Olympique Marseille have been playing really well and leading comfortably the Ligue 1.

In the course of three years Stade Vélodrome has been completely renovated. The West stand with a capacity of 19,000 seats has been newly built, and the capacity of the East stand has been increased. However, the best new feature is the amazing roof, weighing 6,000 tons, now a distinctive landmark of the city of Marseille.
