To preserve its reputation as one of the most modern grounds in the world, it has to undergo some changes from time to time. And that is why Ajax presented their project of a progressive redevelopment of the arena which will go on until 2020. Another reason for launching the project is the fact that Amsterdam intends to be one of the venues for the 2020 World Cup.

The Luzhniki stadium renovation to be completed as scheduled in 2017


Moscow - Luzhniki StadiumMoscow - Luzhniki Stadium10.01.2017: The principal venue for the 2018 World Cup will be the renovated Luzhniki stadium, which will, among other matches, host the final on 8th July. Those were the main reasons for the major renovation of the largest Russian stadium, the home ground of Spartak Moscow until recently. In 2014 the club moved to the newly built Otkritie Arena, which will provide another venue for the World Cup. Moscow will be the only city, in which matches will be played at two stadiums.

Modernization of the Sevilla FC stadium done in three stages


Sevilla - Estadio R. S. PizjuánSevilla - Estadio R. S. Pizjuán02.11.2016: In 2015 the Sevilla FC stadium - Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán - underwent major modernization. Even though the stadium does not resemble modern arenas, which are being built nowadays, the renovation did improve the stadium facilities. Architects of new arenas typically deal with retractable roofs or moveable pitches, whereas the owners of the Andalusian club had different plans, given their financial possibilities. It was only the main stand that was covered by roof prior the modernization and this has not changed after it.

Capacity of Liverpool’s Anfield increased to 54,000

On the occasion, two tiers were added, increasing the capacity by 8,000 seats. However, before the redevelopment had begun, Liverpool had to deal with various problems and the beginning of renovation works had to be postponed. But now that all the problems have been solved, Anfield can offer space for more than 54,000 spectators. d being the sixth (capacity: 49,000).

Modernization of Park des Princes ahead of Euro 2016


Paris - Parc des PrincesParis - Parc des Princes08.07.2016: The Parc des Princes, or Park of the Princes, is the home ground of Paris Saint-Germain. The club has been playing there since 1974, which was four years after PSG had been started. The Parc des Princes, originally a multi-purpose venue, was built in 1897, and like most stadiums at that time it had a cycle track. The track was part of the stadium until 1967, when it hosted the final stage of the Tour de France for the last time. Five years later, a brand new stadium with a capacity of 48,700 was built on the site of the “vélodrome”.

Saint Étienne Stadium modernized prior to EURO 2016


St. Étienne - Geoffroy GuichardSt. Étienne - Geoffroy Guichard20.06.2016: Two years prior to the 2016 European Championship the modernization of the stadium in Saint Étienne, one of the ten venues for the championship, was completed. Renovation works took three years, from June 2011 to July 2014, and resulted in a completely new look of the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. On the occasion, indoor facilities and all stands were renovated – the stands were expanded and new seats were installed there. As planned, there are 6,000 seats more, bringing the stadium capacity up to 41,148.

Modernization of Lens stadium ahead of Euro 2016


Lens - Stade Bollaert-DelelisLens - Stade Bollaert-Delelis17.05.2016: In the eighty years of its history the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, which has been the home ground of RC Lens since its opening in 1933, has undergone several transformations. The last three major renovations were each carried out on the occasion of a major football tournament. The first one was the 1984 European Championship and the second one was the 1998 World Cup - during the second renovation the stadium was rebuilt in the English style, with four separate stands, made of reinforced concrete.

Stylish stands at Mestalla in Valencia


Valencia - MestallaValencia - Mestalla14.04.2016: The symbol of the city of Valencia is a bat, and a bat is also to be found in the crests of Valencia CF and Levante UD respectively, both playing in the Spanish 1st league. And since its last modernization in 2014, a bat has also been a part of the Valencia stadium. On that occasion, Estadio Mestalla was covered with new, mostly orange seats and all over the East Stand black seats create the image of a bat, with white letters V C F in the middle.

Renovation of Udinese stadium about to be completed


Udine -  Stadio FriuliUdine - Stadio Friuli31.08.2015: Already in 2013 we gave you information about the reconstruction of the stadium, which is the home ground of a traditional, Italian Serie A club, Udinese Calcio. That same year the renovation of the main stand began – it is the only stand to retain its original design. The unique feature of the main stand is its arched roof, symbolic of the entire stadium. The old oval-shaped stands with the running track were replaced by new stands, making the stadium football-only.

Reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium for West Ham United


London - Olympic StadiumLondon - Olympic Stadium04.08.2015: West Ham United are getting ready to move to a new ground, the Olympic Stadium in London. The stadium was built to provide a venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics, with a capacity of 80,000 seats. It was designed so that once the Olympics were over, it could be rebuilt to suit the needs of West Ham United, a Premier League club. To this end, the capacity was decreased and the stands were moved closer to the pitch, through the former athletics track.

Manchester City expanding their stadium


Manchester - Etihad StadiumManchester - Etihad Stadium18.05.2015: Manchester City have decided to expand the South and North stands of the Etihad Stadium. The expansion should result in an increase in capacity – originally 47,805 – by another 14,000 seats. The total capacity should go up to 62,000 seats. As part of the expansion works the stadium will also be modernized and a new shopping centre will be built, as these are nowadays a standard facility at new stadiums. The Etihad Stadium modernization project was approved in spring 2013 and in early 2014 the construction works began.

The renovated Stade Vélodrome opened


Marsille - Stade VélodromeMarsille - Stade Vélodrome07.01.2015: After the renovation works, which went on for three years, were completed earlier this year, Stade Vélodrome was officially opened by a French league match between Olympique Marseille and Toulouse, which the home team won 2:0. The match was seen by 61,846 spectators, which is a record number, beating the previous record by several thousands. Apart from Ligue 1 matches the stadium will host many other events: international matches, rugby matches, concerts, Euro 2016 matches and possibly also a Champions League final.

The top-level match to be played at the Maracana stadium is the 2014 World Cup final. In the past, the 1950 World Cup final was played there, and Uruguay then defeated Brazil 2:1. There were 199,854 spectators watching the final at the stadium, which is a record number. It is certain that this record will not be beaten. The modernized Maracana stadium has a capacity of up to 78,838. Nevertheless, it is still one of the biggest stadiums in the World Cup history.
