New stadium of Olympique Lyon has been opened

Lyon - Parc OLLyon - Parc OL 19.01.2016: Olympique Lyon played their very first match in 2016 at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, their new stadium, and they beat Troyes 4-1. It was decided that a new stadium would be built only after it had been confirmed that France would host the 2016 European Championship. The Lyon stadium will provide venue for four group matches, a round-of-16 match and a semi-final match. With a capacity of nearly 60,000 seats it is the third largest stadium in France.

The stadium is located in Décines, a suburb in the eastern part of the city. It is about 10 kilometres from the city centre and about 12 kilometres from the old stadium, Stade de Gerland. Its unique feature is the roof, which has an unusual shape and covers the stands as well as the paved area outside the stadium. The roof is used not only for protecting spectators from the sun and rain but also for collecting rainwater for further use.
Construction of the new stadium took more than three years, from October 2012 to December 2015, and cost 415 million EUR. The club obtained the building permit in February 2012, and preparations began soon afterwards. However, it took nearly a year before construction works started for real. You can read about the problems encountered in the course of construction HERE. It was due to the delay that the estimated completion date was changed from summer 2014 to December 2015.
