Renovation of Udinese Calcio stadium

Udine - Stadio FriuliUdine - Stadio Friuli 04.02.2014: Following a request submitted by one of the visitors of our website,, we are presenting some information about the renovation of the Stadio Friuli, the home of the Italian team Udinese Calcio. The renovation works began in June 2013 and are supposed to be terminated in September 2014. The stadium should newly hold nearly 29,884 spectators, which means that the capacity would be decreased by about 12,000.

Nevertheless, even the comparatively low capacity should be more than sufficient, considering the average attendance of the Serie A matches. The budget is set to about 40 million EUR. According to the plans for renovation, only the arch over the grandstand will be preserved, as it is a symbol of the stadium. The old stands situated around the athletics track will be replaced by new, fully covered stands built around the pitch.

Due to the renovation of the grandstand, the Udinese team played their home matches at the Stadio Nereo Rocco, the home of US Triestina Calcio, now in the second division. Slovan Liberec was one of the teams that played against Udinese at this stadium; it was a Europa League qualification match, and Slovan surprisingly won 3:1.

Currently, this is the second greatest investment in a stadium renovation made in Italy, the first being the Juventus Stadium, newly built in 2011. A new stadium of AS Rome should follow as well; it should be completed in 2016. Several other Italian clubs, e.g. Lazio Rome, Palermo, or Fiorentina, also plan to construct new stadiums. However, lack of finances hinders most of these plans, which, at present, exist only on paper. We will see which of the Italian clubs will be the next to complete construction of a new stadium. |
