Vodafone Arena, new home ground of Besiktas

Istanbul - Vodafone ArenaIstanbul - Vodafone Arena 19.04.2016: By the end of March 2016 construction of the new home ground of the Turkish football club Besiktas J.K., with a capacity of 42,000 seats, was completed. And it was about time – the former stadium had been the home ground of Besiktas for sixty six long years (1947 - 2013). The total cost of construction went up to 100 million USD. Thanks to its facilities and the high standard of comfort it offers the new stadium, named Vodafone Arena, is now one of the most modern arenas in the world.

One of the best features of the new stadium is a number of HD digital interactive screens, installed in various places at the stadium. Fans can watch various statistics, interviews, and results of matches played at other stadiums. The club sponsor – Vodafone – which had gained the naming rights, provided the arena with mobile broadband so that all fans at the stadium can access news and updates quickly and easily.

The construction of the new arena began in June 2013 and the first step was the demolition of the stands of the old BJK İnönü Stadyumu. Since its construction in 1947 the stadium had provided venue for innumerable matches and victory celebrations. The last great event taking place at the BJK İnönü Stadyumu was the victory celebration when Besiktas J.K. won their 13th Turkish Cup in the 2008/09 season. Besiktas remains the third best club in the history of the Turkish Süper Lig.

The former BJK İnönü Stadyumu, and its surroundings, is a historically important landmark, which meant that getting all the permits for complete renovation of the stadium was very lengthy and difficult. However, the Besiktas management worked hard at it and the Besiktas fans can thus enjoy watching matches at a brand new arena, which has a capacity of 10,000 seats more than the old one.

Besiktas played their first match at the new stadium on Monday Apr 11 2016 – they played against Bursaspor (3-2). Bursaspor is another team, which plays at a newly opened stadium. At the end of 2015 they moved to the brand new Crocodile Arena.
